We discuss how this might happen, for example, respecting each other, listening to each other, supporting each other, etc.

To put it all together, I then have them draw another picture at the end of the year and make a new book and we can see how they have changed. They have somewhat of a scavenger hunt in teams for math related items. Share in the comments section!

Students were broken randomly into groups of four. By Genia Connell Grades 1—2, 3—5, 6—8 As an extremely shy student, the beginning of a school year filled me with angst. Here is what I plan to put inside this year: first day of school picture biography that includes current height, favorites, and three goals for the school year a letter each student writes to their future end-of-the-school-year self any trinkets students want to put in that represent themselves at the current point in time. Then the students and I go outside and stand in a circle. Once they have achieved the task, I have them do it again but in opposite order, from December 31 to January 1. The students will see them soon enough — just jump right in! They even notice a difference in their handwriting. This is also easily done with names and alliterative places, names and animals, etc.

I then take the bags and fill them with birthday goodies, staple the top, put them in a plastic bin in the order I will pass them out and they are done for the year! Maybe you could have an ice cream social at the end of the first day of school!

The version I play with my third graders involves everyone sitting in a circle and the first person to go says their first and last names, then something they like that starts with the same initial as their first name. We have discovered that because the children are actively involved in the process, it develops a great rapport between teacher and student, as well as making the children more responsible for the actions. Find the size difference between a twin and full mattress. The children help each other and I step back and enjoy the conversations and the inquiring minds when they find different shades of blue and they try and find the matching color. They really enjoy this activity and always ask to do it again! I learn a great deal about each child and their lives. What I Did Over the Summer I then raffle all of my classroom books off at the end of the year. They decorate the piece of cardboard as they wish. They receive a certificate for becoming detectives! They should not write in that colored part. Click on the images above to print you own editable treat bag. This time, however, they are allowed to talk to each other.

I was able say my own name pronounced Geena High-dukeand the weight of the world was lifted off of my shoulders.
